BALLIN' ON A BUDGET: Twitch Edition

BALLIN' ON A BUDGET: STREAMER EDITION
So, I am still very new to streaming and this maybe common knowledge for a lot of people...But I felt like sharing.
If you're on a tight budget but want some cool stuff to make your stream look more professional here are some things I found out by asking some streaming friends and things I thought of.
1.) A brand logo to use across your social media and twitch, you can get these off fiverr.com for a good price. I got a transparent .png and 2 logos for 25 USD and they're high quality imo.
2.) Lighting is important but high priced lights are expensive. Get a desk lamp and a white light and aim it at yourself and a thin piece of paper towel or wax paper to soften it if you need too. Or find an adjustable desk light that uses a white LED. I have a 20 usd LED swivling desk light that I can dim with a button.
3.) Banners and scene backgrounds for starting, ending, pausing the stream and for banners for social media like YouTube banner, Facebook cover photo, Twitter background. They look cool and give you a more professional feel. I found a site I can make a baseline one or two and edit them with MS paint myself or just make them all on the site for cheap. Its like 2.99 usd to get one or 15 a month for unlimited and you can make a ton. The site also let's you make youtube intro and stuff. https://placeit.net/twitch-banner-maker
4.) Macros for seemeless transitions are cool and they save time and make your stream flow better and make you look good. Elgato has an app that is a professional easy to use stream deck for 1 month free and 2.99 a month after that and you can do it all from your phone and PC. I am a software engineer, but, the skills required to use this is no actual programming and there are a ton of guides and youtube videos on how to fix it up how you want it. You can use it to transition scenes well, change volume, mute your mic, blast your social media that you're going live. Its really worth checking out.
5.) Discord and discord bots. Discord is a great way to engage your audience between streams with a quick chat and discord is on mobile devices too so its convenient. It also allows you to install some cool bots to discord like Streamcord which will alert your discord that you've gone live without you having to do or touch anything with a pretty easy setup and discord and the bot are free. Also Groovy bot is cool it allows your users to help set a music playlist.
6.) Background of your webcam is important because you want to seem professional and not messy. But if you don't have a lot of room in your house for streaming like me, you can put some hooks in the ceiling or wall behind you and hang some cool felt fabric behind you as a background. I used basic green and could use it as a green screen but I'm going to get a cool pattern I just haven't made it to the store yet. But fabric stores, Walmart, hobby lobby thrift stores have fabric and felt for clearance prices and it makes an easy dyi background.
7.) Social media. Set yourself up across all social media accounts and update them some. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, tiktoc, youtube, etc. Its daunting at first but once you make accounts for your twitch brand you can reach so many more people. And its free! Also, download your streams and upload them to your YouTube channel, its free real estate Jim.
8.) Starting few followers. To start your followers off ask friends, spouse and family let them know its important to you and you would appreciate it. Then ask your co-workers to check it out and drop you a follow. Play a game with a clan, guild, online buddies? Ask them to follow. That way you get an audience who may actually engage you from day 1 to talk in the chat and it could draw more viewers in the fact that you aren't at 0 viewers but not 1k plus means they can get special attention from the streamer.
9.) Watch your stream numbers out of the corner of your eye while you play and greet and thank whoever joins. Talk while you play even if you're commenting on your own stuff with 0 viewers it makes the playback better to watch for youtube viewers and it keeps you in the mindset of talking to your chat instead of being silent and staring at a screen.
10.) Avoid "follow-for-follow" groups and communities. This isn't network its just scamming the system, you won't get true engagement from it. Also, if you work hard on your stream and people show up your personal fulfillment is way better! Every natural follow/sub feels like a huge milestone. Where if you follow for follow its a hollow victory and can eventually bite you in the butt long term.
11.) Don't spam your channel in games, chats or discord. Most people find it annoying but you can drop it if its relevant to the conversation at hand. What you can do is drop it in party chats because the people you're actively playing with might think its cool to see themselves on twitch, go check you out and drop a follow. As for streamers chats, one thing you can do is go to another streamers channel and don't even mention your also a streamer. Find a streamer with a small but reasonable amount of people 15-30 and engage their chat and get everyone talking about that streamers content. Do this a while before you plan to go live. Then before you go live send that streamer a message tell them you're a streamer, you love their content, you have to leave because you're going to go live too, and see if they will raid your channel. Dont do it expecting them too or trying to guilt them too, it makes you a friend to be polite and respectful. Even if they don't want to help you out, it gets you in the mind space to stream by chatting their chat up and you did something nice for someone without expecting anything in return.
12) Stream often at first to build your brand, to test stuff out like backgrounds, transitions, music all that stuff and it increases your visibility. Have patience and don't get discouraged that you aren't blowing up right away, no streamer was a hit in their first week, month or even six months. Keep the faith and work at it if its a hobby you enjoy.
13.) Don't neglect your life. Don't neglect your relationships, work and other life things for streaming. You can put a lot into it at first to Jumpstart your brand but it isn't paying your bills or keeping you warm at night so, priority is important. Stream when you have time, when you want to and do it for you otherwise you will burn out fast.
14.) Have a thing that makes you more unquie. Don't just be a guy who plays games and occasionally talks to the chat. For me that means when I play Call of Duty or Overwatch I put in the stream title I am playing with viewers and do it. Play with viewers and make them feel important, give them 15 minutes of fame. I also answer lore/story questions when I play fallout, World of Warcraft or Warhammer 40k games because I have a lot of knowledge there so my stream title is something like, Playing WoW and answering lore questions, that makes you way more unquie and memorable giving you something to stand out from all the other people someone could watch.
15.) Shower, eat and all that before you stream. Eat a meal before you stream, shower and put on some fresh clothes. You will feel better, not be hungry during the stream and look fresher. Also bring a bottle or two of water and maybe a small snack like peanuts with you for during your stream time.
16.) Get personal but not too personal. You are a normal human like the rest of us, feel free to talk about your life and experiences with your chat when relevant. Just remember that Twitch isn't there to dump your woes upon your chat, no one wants to be depressed. Also just as important don't give away personal information that could jeopardize your location, phone number, life schedule, etc on stream. Be safe about what you share.
17.) Follow all of twitch.tv rules. Review them and stay ontop of what they are to avoid getting a ban. Also follow unspoken social rules like not bad mouthing other streamers, nor spamming your stream link, things like that.
18.) Get mods for your discord and your chat. At first people you know and trust. Talk with chat regulars and if you feel like you can trust them offer them moderator status.
19.) Playing what you like to play is important because your passion will show in your face and voice during your stream. You may also want to play some of your favorite games that aren't the most popular and saturated games. Those games from the past that don't have 200k people watching can be goldmines for followers/subscribers because it's a niche market that you're filling. Instead of playing WoW or CoD...Try diablo 3, fallout new vegas, call of cthulu, those are games a lot of people loved but not a ton of people are streaming, so the market is more open for you to get views.
20.) Its all fun, enjoy yourself and don't take it too seriously.
If this helps you, check out my stream, twitch.tv/burnsmh and review my content to see my transition from super basic to a lot better in a short time. If you like the content of my stream drop me a follow c:
