1 - Minnesota's got a three point lead with both teams having 6 games to go. If Minnesota wins 5 out of 6, it's over, regardless of Colorado's performance.
2 - If Minnesota and Colorado ends the season tied in points, Colorado advances into the playoffs based on their ROW (the first tie-breaker) in every possible case, except where Minnesota wins just one and has 3 OTLs and where Colorado has 6 straight OTLs to finish the season, as Minnesota would then have the same points and the same number of ROW wins as Colorado, but holds the head-to-head advantage (the second tie-breaker.)
3 - Outside of that, Minnesota must take the season on points.

Colorado 0 - 4 Minnesota
Last time out, Minnesota ventured into hostile territory in Denver against their playoff race opponent Colorado, with both teams desperate for the two points. Colorado came off from the opening puck drop playing their hard-hitting, aggressive style against an undersized Wild team. Colorado dominated the first period, and controlled the pace and rhythm of the first period. Minnesota weathered the storm, however - going into the second period with a 0-0 score and perhaps a fresher club, after a first period marked by the Avalanche skating hard, hitting hard, and finishing every check in sight. The Wild saw a slower team in the second, and continued their methodical approach to the game, slowing picking apart a defense that looked unable to stop defensive zone entries and looked worse for wear after the high energy first period. The results of the second where four great chances for the Wild in the second period, and a 2-0 scoreline.
Parise's second of the night early in the third period created perhaps the most unique event I have ever seen in almost 40 years of watching hockey. Being down 3-0, Colorado coach Patrick Roy pulled his goalie, trying to capitalize on a Wild line that was held on the ice for an extended period of time due to several icing plays by the Wild in a row. During an on-the-fly line change, Roy sent his goalie back in. After pulling his goalie yet again a few minutes later, Granlund got his obligatory empty net goal, resulting in a 4-0 victory against arch rival and playoff challenger Colorado.

The Wild went out and accomplished what they set out to do against a Colorado side last time out. Minnesota looked like a team playing a step behind in the first, but let Colorado wear itself as they sprinted all over the ice to finish checks. Sticking to the game plan, the Wild patiently waited for the opportunities that would come against such an aggressive opponent and capitalized when those moments finally came. Minnesota took a very considered approach towards the game against Colorado, with every player and coach interviewed afterwards mentioned that they anticipated the physically aggressive style, and were told to be responsible defensively - and that the opportunities would come from Colorado over-extending itself early. It was a solid game plan from Interim Head Coach John Torchetti that looks to have played out exactly as he and his club had hoped.
One of the glaring notes from recent games, as well as the game against Colorado has been the effectiveness of the penalty kill as well as the number of penalties Wild players have taken. Justine Fontaine drew two obvious holding penalties last game, and the Wild have Jason Zucker waiting in the wings to get out of the dog house - perhaps Fontaine's assist keeps him in the roster at the expense of Schroeder (whose goal Fontaine assisted on) and Zucker. It's undeniable that Zucker possesses more offensive punch than either Fontaine or Schroeder, but it comes down to Coach Torchetti being willing to replace either player whose defensive game has been several notches above Zucker's in recent weeks. Sadly, it's not an embarrassment of riches that ultimately puts Zucker back into the roster - it's an illness to David Jones that creates an open roster spot for Zucker's return tonight against Chicago. In other news, Ryan Carter has returned to skating practice, but rumor is that be may not see ice-time until the last two games of the season. Carter's injury has been more serious than the Wild have let on to this point with the media.
Chicago, who is 4-4-2 in their last 10 during the playoff push, has been owned by Minnesota during this season. Chicago is a very-human 0-3-1 against Minnesota so far, and look for Coach Torchetti to continue it by limiting the number of powerplay looks Chicago receives, whose is fifth in the league on the powerplay. Look for Minnesota to force Chicago to take penalties with quick transitions in the neutral zones and odd-man rushes into the attacking zone - the Blackhawks' Achilles's heel is the PK this season, ranked 24th in the league. Assistant coaches have noted Chicago's ability to get frustrated easily and often, it's fair to expect that they will look to exploit that.
The playoff race is getting tighter again - with six games left for both Colorado and Minnesota, the Wild have a three point lead. That makes it a two-results against situation before things get really dicey. Minnesota controls their destiny as of now, but look for Colorado to keep applying pressure, as they did last night against a very hot Nashville Predators side. The Avs' 4-3 victory yesterday put the distance at two games instead of three. Both clubs play tonight against division rivals, with Colorado going up against an also red-hot St. Louis Blues side that has won their last four games.
Some healthy perspective on the amount of time remaining and the playoff race: if the Wild win tonight and Colorado loses, they will have to drop points in more than half of their remaining games for Colorado to even have a chance to come back. Tonight's game is the separation game - win this, and the Wild can afford a mistake or two. Lose tonight, and and it's a tightrope performance until the end of the season.
