South American football's governing body CONMEBOL have threatened a continental ban to any team who don't release their rights to EA Sports
|submitted by MatiasCDUC to FifaCareers|
Notable one-hit wonder league title winners across leagues worldwide aka my stupid quest to mention some truly obscure football teams (Part II: CONMEBOL)
Before I begin, let me get this out of the way: Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are not part of CONMEBOL, they are part of CONCACAF.
Outside of UEFA, sadly, data starts getting pretty spotty for leagues lower down on the chain. Even for years further back, less data exists to back up some team's one shot at success. CONMEBOL may be the next best continental body when it comes to that but it does mean that countries such as Paraguay were extremely difficult to scrape data from. I'll have to take comments from you guys as to regards to one-hit wonders as regards some teams and would actually quite appreciate it if you would.
When it comes to South America, they may be the smallest in terms of the number of member nations but that doesn't mean there isn't amazing football to be found here. There's also quite a few one-hit wonders as well.
So South America, here we come.
- Paranaense (2001): thank goodness this Portuguese speaking country has historically had more parity than a certain other Portuguese speaking country. Prior to 2003, Brazil had a knockout tournament to determine the champions. Paranaense made the playoffs as the 2-seed and quickly dispatched its competition, including a win over #1 São Caetano in the finals. This win came after Paranaense missed the playoffs the previous season and although they had a runner-up appearance a few years later, quickly feel back into mediocrity afterward.
- Sport Recife (1987): by winning its respective division, Sport qualified for the knockout phase and beat Guarani for their first title. Sadly, Sport got relegated just a few seasons afterwards and has not had quite the same level of success since. In fact, they only recently earned promotion back from the Serie B following their performance last season.
- Coritiba (1985): Coritiba had an exciting win over Bangu in the finals in which they beat them 6-5 on PKs. Coritiba gained promotion back to the top the previous year and they had a quick rise to the top. However, Coritiba shortly fell back to Serie B after 1989. In fact, like Sport, they also had to fight to earn a promotion from Serie B the previous season and accomplished that.
- Guarani (1978): defeated Palmeiras for the title. Guarani had fairly mediocre finishes throughout the 70s but obviously, that changed in 1978. Sadly, they got relegated out of Serie A following the 1980 season and their longest stint since then was from 1992-2004. They were relegated after a 1-year stint in 2010 and have been stuck in Serie B and Serie C purgatory ever since.
- Atlético Mineiro (1971): finished two points above São Paulo to take home the title in the final phase. Mineiro was very competitive throughout the rest of the 70s and 80s but just could never repeat since and suffered relegation in 2005, although they have since returned to Serie A though still have yet to win the league since.
- Arsenal de Sarandí (2011-2012): Argentina had a system where they two champions during a given season. I'm not sure if one is viewed as more important than another so I'll count both equally. Arsenal (not the one from London, mind you) managed to snag the second championship with a top-place finish over Tigre by 2 points. Arsenal did manage a third place finish in the first championship of the previous season but for the most part had been a mediocre team until they came on top. Arsenal sadly suffered relegation following the 2017-18 season though they did get promoted in time for the 2019-20 season and are a middling club.
- Banfield (2009-10): here we see another first and second half title season, with Banfield winning the first half. The previous seasons, Banfield was mostly a lower-half team with a 3rd-place finish being the only exception. Banfield, however, suffered relegation in 2012 just 3 years later. They have since returned to league play, however, but are currently stuck in mediocrity toward the bottom of the standings.
- Chacarita Juniors (1969): just two seasons prior, Chacarita had to play in the Reclasificatorio to avoid relegation. At this point in time, teams from two groups played and the top two teams qualified for a very American-like playoff matchup. Chacarita Juniors defeated longtime-Argentinian powerhouse River Plate 4-1 to claim their first and only. Chacarita, unfortunately, would become mostly a bottom-feeder the following seasons. They're currently stuck in the Primera B Nacional, the second-tier of Argentinean football.
- Cobresal (2014-15): as with Argentina, just very recently Chile also had the two-champion system in place. Cobresal had an awful 15th-place finish in the first half so it was really surprising that they managed a major jump to the top during the second half to claim the second champions spot. However, it didn't take long for Cobresal to get relegated, which happened after the 2016-17 season, just two years later. They're back in the Campeonato Nacional, however, and have mostly been a middling team.
- O'Higgins (2013): O'Higgins had been finishing toward the top of the table but technically finished runner-up in the Torneo Apertura this season to Universidad Católica, a long-time Chilean powerhouse. However, O'Higgins pulled out the 1-0 victory to claim their first title. O'Higgins then began a steady decline to the middle and even the bottom of the table though they're still at the top-flight as of this season.
- Unión San Felipe (1971): San Felipe beat Universidad by 2 points to earn this title. What was truly shocking about this title was that San Felipe was promoted into the league the very same season and they defeated a longtime Chilean bully to win it. San Felipe quickly fell to the very bottom of the league and suffered inevitable relegation after the 1974 season, just 3 years later. They're currently playing in the second tier.
- Binacional (2019): Lima is pretty much more than 90% of Peruvian football so it was a really nice surprise for Peruvian fans (well, outside of Lima) to see a team from Juliaca win the most recent iteration of the Primera División. They won the aggregate over longtime powerhouse Alianza (from guess where) 4-3. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Binacional wasn't promoted all that long ago before winning this one (in fact, they're not even 10 years old yet as a club). Obviously, Binacional is still in the Primera División and while it's still early, they're in third place.
- Juan Aurich (2011): Juan Aurich defeated Alianza via tiebreaker to claim this year's title. They were promoted just 3 years ago and had a pretty quick rise to the top. Juan Aurich had a strong runner-up season shortly afterward but just 6 years after their title, got relegated. They're currently playing in the Liga 2. BTW Juan Aurich is another non-Lima club: they're from Chiclayo.
- Boyacá Chicó (2008): Colombia still has the two-champion system in place. Boyacá had a really cool run to the top during the first half and they beat longtime powerhouse Americá on PKs in the finals to earn the win. The second half, however, was an entirely different story, however, as they fell to 14th. Boyacá had a few good halves prior to this championship and it was nice that they could finally break through. They fell into mediocrity pretty quickly, however, and suffered relegation in 2016. They're back in the Categoría Primera A though they're currently in line for a relegation spot again.
- Deportivo Pasto (2006): 2006 gave us the rare distinction of seeing one-hit wonder winners in both halves of the season, and Pasto was the first of the two (the next entry contains the second-half winner). Pasto defeated Cali in the finals to earn the win in the first half. Pasto had lost the 2002 finals once but they were more of an inconsistent team before they gave us this. Pasto, sadly, got relegated just 3 seasons later, though they are back at the top flight currently in third.
- Cúcuta Deportivo (2006): and here's the second half champion for you. Cúcuta defeated Tolima in the second-half finals for the second-half title. The interesting thing was Cúcuta was only promoted just prior to the beginning of this season and yet finished second in the draw in the first half and then did this the second half. Cúcuta had a few strong seasons after that but barely avoided relegation after 2012 and got actually relegated after 2013. They did get a recent promotion prior to 2019 but are currently in last place in the the Torneo Apertura.
- Monagas (2017): I believe Monagas was only promoted the season prior to this one (again, correct me if I'm wrong) and they defeated Lara in the finals that year after being the first-half winner. Monagas quickly fell into mediocrity two seasons later but currently sit at fifth in the first-half standings so maybe a comeback is on the way.
- Deportivo Lara (2011-12): Venezuela's system at the time was to have the champions of the two halves play each other in a final. That didn't happen this year...because Lara won both halves. For a team that finished towards the bottom of the tables in both halves last season, to have won the title so dominantly was an unparalleled accomplishment. Lara had flashes of competitiveness the following years, even finishing runner-up in 2017, but have not quite been able to replicate their success.
- Mineros (1988-89): they finished one point ahead of Pepeganga Margarita for the title that year. Mineros had been a competitive team the few years prior so it was only fair for them to taste the top at least once. Mineros remained competitive for some years to follow but have just not been able to find the same miracle finishes of their only title-winning season. They're currently a middling Primera División club.
- Valencia, now Carabobo (1971): just to clarify, this is the one from Venezuela, not Spain. Valencia claimed this title by 4 points over Deportivo Italia. Just last season, Valencia was runner-up so it's not really that much of a surprise. Valencia would finish runner-up again in 1973 and while they had a few spotty good years afterward, found themselves relegated in 1982. They're still in the Primera División but are a pretty mediocre club.
- Delfín (2019): this very recent entry beat LDU Quito in the penalty shootout of the finals to claim their first title. Delfín had finished runner-up just 2 years ago so they were honestly due for one and it was nice that it came over one of the more dominant Ecuadorian teams in history. The Serie A has just started this season and while Delfín is currently towards the bottom, there are still a lot of games to be played so there's still a good chance they can climb the table.
- Deportivo Cuenca (2004): Cuenca genuinely surprised the league this year with a top-placement in the Liguilla Final to claim their first title. Cuenca had moments of competitiveness but it only paid dividends in this season. Since then, they've continued to have their moments of competitiveness but it hasn't quite gotten them back to the top yet.
- Olmedo (2000): this title is significant because it's the first time the league title left the confines of Quito and Guayaquil (Cuenca, talked about before, was the second time it happened). Olmedo defeated El Nacional by 3 points in the final round to claim the title. Just the previous season, Olmedo missed out on the championship round by a pretty comfortable margin. Olmedo only recently earned a promotion back to Serie A, finishing last season in the middle of the table.
- Progreso (1989): they finished 5 games ahead of historical bully Nacional to win their first title. This is one of the only true worst-to-first stories as Progreso literally finished in last place the previous season but avoided relegation. Progreso then fell back into suckitude afterward but as of today still play in the Primera División and had a middling finish last year.
- Real Potosí (2007): Bolivian football had the two-champion system and Potosí won the first half of the season by 2 points over Bolívar. Potosí had been an OK team in the previous seasons but climbed to the very top kind of suddenly. Potosí continued to be competitive in a few seasons afterward and currently still play in the Primera División, having finished in the middle the previous season.'
- Universitao (1969): they finished by 3 points over Bolívar to claim this title. Just a few seasons prior, Universitao was a frequent basement-dweller the years prior to this title. They recently suffered relegation from the top-flight two seasons ago.
